Clean Appliances Last Longer

One easy way to save money around the home is to take care of the things you own. Not only do appliances last longer if you keep them clean, but they run more efficiently, thus giving you energy savings as well.

  1. Refrigerators have compressor coils at the back which should be routinely vacuumed. Also, pull out the tray at the bottom front, empty any accumulated water, and clean underneath the refrigerator.
  2. When loading your dishwasher, remove large particles of food, and take the labels off of jars. Clean the seals around the door.
  3. Furnaces should be inspected yearly for safety and efficiency. Filters should be changed at least every 3 months.
  4. Overloading your washing machine causes it to work harder. Remember to empty pockets of items that might scratch the inside or clog it up.
  5. Overloading the clothes dryer causes it to work harder too. Empty the lint filter after every load.
  6. Clean out the clothes dryer vent. A clogged vent can cause a fire and can also cause your dryer to overheat.
  7. When vacuuming, check the floor to make sure there aren’t any pointed or large objects that might get stuck in the hose. Christmas tree needles can cause a lot of havoc. Check the vacuum cleaner bag regularly, and replace as needed.
  8. Clean the filters of window air conditioners at least once a year or more, depending on usage.
  9. Clean the filters of humidifiers at least once a year or more, depending on usage.
  10. Clean the microwave filter.
