Conserve Water

There are numerous ways to cut water use and save money. It’s easy to ignore how much water is wasted when it flows so easily out of the tap. Here are some simple ways to conserve.

  1. Fix leaky toilets and faucets.
  2. Don’t let the water run when you brush your teeth.
  3. Instead of letting the water run while washing or shaving, plug the drain and add sufficient water for the job.
  4. Wait for a full load before running your dishwasher and washing machine.
  5. If you’re washing vegetables, add some water to a pan or a sink with the drain plug in.
  6. Use the leftover water from above to water your plants.
  7. If you have a double sink partially fill one side for rinsing hand-washed dishes.
  8. Assign each person in the family a glass to use for the whole day.
  9. Save the water you run while waiting for water to heat up in the shower or sink and water your plants with it.
  10. Compost your garbage instead of putting it down the garbage disposal.
  11. Buy a rain barrel or other receptacle to collect rain water. Also put a container under your roof downspout. Both can be used to water your grass and garden.
  12. Forget about having the perfect lawn that requires a lot of water. Turn some of it into plantings that are cultivated to need less water.

  1. I went away this winter. While I was gone, the toilet started running and I had a huge water bill. Fortunately I was able to get it reduced after proving that I fixed the problem and showed this to the city water utilities.

I’m also a fan of the dual flush toilet, which is popular in many countries outside the USA.
