Rebates are a great way for the consumer to save money if you take advantage of them, and an equally great way for a company to make money if you don’t. Unfortunately, many people don’t apply for them because they forget, lose the receipt or don’t have all the necessary paperwork.
Another fairly recent practice when you buy something at a store is for them to give you a coupon good for a specific amount off your next purchase. I would bet that these are redeemed even less often than rebates, and amount to a real money saver for the store.
Some stores also issue free cards to those who fill out a brief form. These allow you to purchase certain advertised items for less than full retail. If you don’t have your card on you, you’re out of luck.
If you find yourself missing out on these opportunities, try doing the following:
- Whenever you purchase something with a mail-in rebate, don’t leave the store without the proper paperwork. Try to fill out the form and mail it in as soon as you get home. If this isn’t possible, put the papers in a manilla folder. Write yourself a note and stick it on the refrigerator or some other place where you will see it. On the note put what the rebate is for, and the due date.
- Once you have filled out the rebate form, make a copy of it as well as the receipt. Also include the date that you mailed it in. Make sure you have the name and address of the place to which it was sent. Keep these in your rebate folder.
- For coupons that give you money back on your next purchase, try keeping these in an envelope in your purse or a special place in your wallet. If it’s from a store where you regularly shop, you will probably get in the habit of using them. If not, stick them on the refrigerator or other noticeable place. Make note of any expiration dates.
- Most stores who issue discount cards now ask if you have one when you are making your purchase. Many of them also have a smaller card which you can attach to your key ring. At any rate, keep them with you at all times so you’ll remember to use them.
- If you are still having trouble, stop shopping at those stores, and find one that gives you a better overall price on everything without all the cards and papers. I stopped shopping at a grocery store that required a card, and I saved money, gas and time in the long run by making all my purchases in one place.
